Default U.S. Navy Ships Strikes Tubbataha Reef

January 17th, 2013

A U.S. navy minesweeper has run aground in the Tubbataha marine park Thursday around 3 a.m. local time.

The Avenger class U.S.S. Guardian and her crew of 80, which includes 8 Fil-ams had just left the port of call at Subic Bay for resupply when it ran aground in the Tubbataha National Marine Park, a World Heritage Site about 400 miles south east of Manila.

The Philippines has a policy of fining those that cause reef damage, at about $300 US dollars per square meter of reef damage. It is not clear yet whether the ship has run aground on a reef structure, or just the shallows in the region.

Officials report they will try to refloat the ship off the reef during the next high tide.

The U.S Navy has stepped up patrols in the West Philippine Sea region after China has repeatedly increase tensions in the region by engaging in hegemonic bullying of its peaceful neighbors while trying to unlawfully expand its empire.
